Risk assessment
Hazards covered for electrical installation
Every hazard below is assessed with likelihood, severity and residual risk after controls, presented in the traffic-light format Principal Contractors expect.
- ✓ Contact with live conductors during alteration or extension of existing installations
- ✓ Arc flash and arc blast when working at or near distribution boards
- ✓ Stored energy in capacitors, UPS systems and standby supplies
- ✓ Working at height for containment, tray and high-level cable runs
- ✓ Manual handling of cable drums, containment lengths and switchgear
- ✓ Cutting and drilling into structure - dust, buried services and asbestos in pre-2000 buildings

Sequence of work
The method statement follows the real on-site sequence, with controls tied to each step rather than listed separately at the end.
- Design review, drawing check and confirmation of the point of isolation
- Permit to work and lock-off / tag-out applied, proved dead with an approved voltage indicator
- Containment installation - tray, basket, trunking and conduit set out
- Cable pulling, dressing and termination
- Inspection and testing to BS 7671, certification and schedules of test results
- Energisation under controlled conditions, functional testing and handover
